The region

About Ukhahlamba Drakensberg

The Drakensberg — uKhahlamba, the Barrier of Spears — runs for 200 km along the western edge of the province. It is a dual UNESCO World Heritage Site, listed for both its landscape and the largest concentration of San rock art in the world. The central Berg is resort country and works beautifully for families; the southern Berg is wilder, and where Sani Pass climbs into Lesotho.

Things to do here

  • Sani Pass 4×4 to Lesotho and the highest pub in Africa
  • Amphitheatre and Tugela Falls viewpoints
  • San rock art at Giant’s Castle and Kamberg
  • Falcon Ridge bird of prey displays
  • Drakensberg Canopy Tour ziplines
  • Monk’s Cowl and Cathedral Peak day hikes
  • Horse riding and trout fishing
  • Drakensberg Boys Choir performances

Where you can stay

Family resorts with pools and kids’ programmes in the Champagne Valley, self-catering chalets and mountain lodges throughout, and simple hiker’s accommodation in the southern Berg.
