The central Drakensberg is the sweet spot for families — resort-style accommodation with pools and kids’ programmes, but a World Heritage mountain range starting at the fence line. The walks here are short and rewarding rather than brutal, and there is enough on site that a rainy afternoon is not a disaster. We drive you up, so nobody has to do the mountain passes.

Getting there — your choice
Let us drive. Return road transfer from Durban, Pietermaritzburg or King Shaka in one of our vehicles, plus the running around between the resort, Falcon Ridge and the trailheads. The mountain roads are fine but long — most families would rather not drive them.
Self-drive. Prefer your own car? We drop the transport element and adjust the package accordingly — you still get the accommodation, the activities and the full itinerary, plus directions and our local phone support for the whole trip.
Stay & Play
Your base
A family unit or self-catering chalet at a central Drakensberg resort in the Champagne Valley or Cathkin Peak area — typically with a pool, playground and on-site restaurant. Dinner and breakfast included where the property offers it. We confirm the exact resort with your quote.
Activities — all within easy reach
- Falcon Ridge Bird of Prey Centre — A live flying display with eagles, falcons and owls. Runs most days at 10:30 and takes about an hour. (10 min drive)
- Cannibal Caves guided walk — A gentle two-hour there-and-back hike to sandstone caves with big valley views. Fine for children from about six. (On the doorstep)
- Drakensberg Boys Choir School — World-famous choir, public performances on Wednesdays during term. (15 min drive)
- Horse riding at the foot of the Berg — Short led trails suitable for complete beginners and children. (15 min drive)
- Monk’s Cowl day walks — A choice of marked trails from a short river walk to a half-day climb, all from one trailhead. (20 min drive)
