Local tourism operators had a chance to sharpen their customer service game this month, as eThekwini Municipality and South African Tourism hosted a Welcome Campaign Training workshop at the Durban Botanic Gardens.

The session, run by the eThekwini Municipality’s Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Division in partnership with South African Tourism, brought together tourism businesses and industry stakeholders from across the region on 10 July 2026, from 10:00 to 12:00.

The focus was practical: giving local tourism role players real tools for delivering warm, authentic and memorable visitor experiences. The message was simple — the way a guest is welcomed shapes the way they remember a destination, and better guest satisfaction feeds directly into stronger repeat business and word of mouth.

Why this matters for KwaZulu-Natal

KwaZulu-Natal competes for visitors against every other South African province and a long list of international destinations. Infrastructure and attractions get people through the door once. What brings them back — and what gets them recommending the destination to friends and family — is almost always the human side of the trip: how they were greeted, how quickly a problem was sorted out, whether the person helping them actually seemed to want them there.

Training like this is part of a broader push to make sure that, wherever a visitor lands in the province, the welcome feels consistent. For smaller operators in particular — shuttle drivers, guesthouse owners, tour guides — sessions like this are a rare chance to get practical, structured guidance rather than figuring it out on the job.

Backing it from our side

As a Durban-based operator ourselves, we back initiatives like this. Good service is not a nice-to-have in tourism — it is the product. We will keep an eye out for the next round of training and encourage other KZN tourism businesses to register early, since spots are limited and allocated on a first come, first served basis.

For future workshops in this series, keep an eye on eThekwini Municipality’s tourism communications, or reach out to us and we will help point you in the right direction.
